Relief to Kenyans as cheaper cooking gas hits market owing removal of an 8 percent VAT with EPRA promising more.

Cooking gas will be more affordable for Kenyan households for the first time since July 2023 as a result of the removal of an 8% Value Added Tax (VAT) on the essential product.

A 13-kg liquefied petroleum gas retails for between Ksh2,800 and Ksh3,200 according to the most recent pricing rates, depending on the brand and location.

Meanwhile, the price of a 6-kilogram supply of cooking gas varies from Ksh890 to Ksh1,060, depending on the market and other variables like proximity to the depot.

Speaking on the matter, Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) Director-General Daniel Kiptoo said as long as businesses keep restocking and bringing in more goods, prices will keep dropping.

“The cost of refiling gas cylinders has gone down mainly due to the removal of taxes,” EPRA Director-General Daniel Kiptoo told journalists.

The new costs are determined by the provisions of the Finance Act 2023, which exempted cooking gas from the Value Added Tax (VAT) of 8% and other taxes that had previously placed it out of reach for most houses.

Additionally, the 2.0% Railway Development Levy and the 3.5% Import Declaration Fees on cooking gas were eliminated by Finance Act 2023, fulfilling a pledge made by President William Ruto.

“The rate of tax shall be in the case of a zero-rated supply, in the case of the supply of liquefied petroleum gas including propane,” Finance Act 2023 read in parts.

Ruto had earlier pledged that his administration would ensure that every Kenyan household has access to cooking gas by making it affordable.

“Every Kenyan household will have access to cooking gas, and we will ensure that gas prices reduce by removing all taxes on cooking gas, Ruto said on March 2, 2023.
