Family of Late Enoch Kibunguchy suspect food poisoning after death of former MP

The family of former Likuyani Member of Parliament Enoch Kibunguchy, who passed away on Tuesday, December 23, has raised concerns over the circumstances that led to their kin’s death.

Addressing the press at the deceased’s home in Kakamega County, Kibunguchy’s family claimed that the former legislator might have died following a suspected case of food poisoning.

While calling for immediate investigations into Kibunguchy’s death, the family noted that their assumption was based on the medical diagnosis conducted on the former MP while he was alive.

According to the MP’s nephew, Kibunguchy initially fell ill while at home, where several attempts to manage his condition proved futile, forcing them to take him to the hospital.

“When he came here, we were trying to take care of him at home, but whatever we were trying to prevent was not going away. So that is when we brought him to the hospital,” said Kibunguch’s nephew.

“We were thinking that it might be something else, maybe blood pressure, but when the doctors did the test and came back saying that it was food poisoning, it raised a red flag, and we began retracing back,” the relative added.

Despite the diagnosis and attempts by doctors to treat him, Kibunguchy’s condition deteriorated, with doctors revealing that the poison had immensely interfered with the former legislator’s body.

The family went ahead to question the severity and the intensity of the illness, alleging that Kibunguchy’s poisoning did not align with their understanding of normal food poisoning cases.

“We have the details we cannot provide right now, and it is for the investigation team, and we are trying to think how the food poisoning might have come about, but the question is the aggressiveness of the food poisoning,” the nephew stated.

They further disclosed that doctors later informed them that Kibunguchy was facing multiple complications, including kidney failure, intestinal bleeding, and breathing difficulties.

“We even felt sorry for the doctors. They could come and tell us they are dealing with a failing kidney, intestinal bleeding in the stomach, and breathing issues,” the family revealed.

Kibunguchy died while receiving treatment at the Eldoret Hospital.

The 72-year-old succeeded the late Cyrus Jirongo as Lugari MP, serving from 2003 to 2007. He later became the Likuyani MP, where he served for two consecutive terms between 2013 and 2022.
