Efforts are underway to contain a fire that broke out in Embakasi Girls Secondary School in Mukuru, Nairobi, on Sunday morning, July 6.

The tragedy was confirmed by the Kenya Red Cross, which dispatched its emergency response team to manage the situation.

“Fire at Embakasi Girls’ School, Nairobi County. Efforts to contain it are underway,” the humanitarian organisation said via X.

Others on the ground are the Nairobi Fire Brigade and Community-Based Response Team.

Clouds of smoke were captured spiralling out of a high-rise block of dormitories within the school compound.

Property and learning materials of a yet-to-be-disclosed value were damaged by the fire.

The students watched from the ground as the raging flames and smoke billowed from the windows of the topmost floor of the block.

The cause of the fire was not established immediately.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino empathised with the students and teachers at the school.
