Ford Kenya rules out merger with United Democratic Alliance (UDA), vows independent path to 2027 elections.
Ford Kenya, led by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, has firmly declared that it will not merge with or dissolve into the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as the 2027 general elections approach.
The party’s leadership made this announcement during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Sentrim Elementaita in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
This decision is a direct response to ongoing calls for constituent parties in the Kenya Kwanza alliance to unite under a single political entity.
Despite pressure from President William Ruto for political consolidation, Ford Kenya has opted for a path of independence, determined to safeguard its autonomy within the ruling coalition.
The party’s Secretary-General John Chikati emphasised that Ford Kenya will continue to be an active and vibrant political force, with plans to strengthen its systems and structures.
“The NEC resolved that Ford-Kenya will not fold. We shall remain active, vibrant, and ready to form coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections,” Chikati said.
The party intends to maintain its independence while also exploring new alliances as the 2027 elections draw closer.
In addition to the political manoeuvring, Ford Kenya is committed to a strategic rebranding, which includes a focus on youth recruitment.
The party will launch a mass registration drive targeting young people, aiming to build a new generation of leaders.
Chikati pointed out that the party has identified regions like Turkana, Vihiga, West Pokot, Nandi, Kilifi and Wajir as key areas where it has strong support, and it plans to strengthen its grassroots presence in these counties through a 30-day registration campaign.

Chikati also revealed that the party is ready to field candidates in the upcoming by-elections in Malava, Ugunja, and Banissa constituencies.
“We have already identified candidates who will vie for these seats and are currently working on strategies on how to clinch them,” he said.
Despite its independent stance, Ford Kenya has assured its commitment to the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
However, the party has also made it clear that it will not hesitate to forge new political partnerships as it prepares for the elections. This comes in the wake of the Amani National Congress (ANC) merging with UDA, further highlighting the divergent paths within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
The decision by Ford Kenya to remain independent marks a significant development in the political landscape as it prepares for a competitive battle in the 2027 general elections.
The party’s focus on rebranding and youth engagement reflects a broader strategy to solidify its base and remain a key player in Kenyan politics.
