Foreign Affairs Ministry breaks silence after CS Mutua remarks on the availability of job opportunities in Canada

Foreign Affairs Ministry breaks silence after CS Mutua remarks on the availability of job opportunities in Canada.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has clarified his prior statement regarding the employment opportunities available to Kenyans in Canada.

In a statement on May 16, Mutua stated that he was in discussions with Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Sean Fraser to see Kenyans go to live and work in Canada.

“I was pleased to note that there are job opportunities within various economic sectors across Canada and Kenyans can travel to Canada as students, tourists and as workers,” Mutua’s statement read, with a caution to Kenyans to be aware of fake job opportunities.

His statement comes after the Canadian Immigration Department warned Kenyans of fake jobs that were targeting them, a message that a number of Kenyans thought was targeting CS Mutua.

Now, the Foreign Affairs CS has blamed the Kenyan media for misinformation on the issue.

“This is the sensationalism of journalists, I went to Canada and held meetings with different ministers, and we deliberated on issues to deal with business, the exports of our products like avocados, and macadamia to Canada. We also discussed how investors can come here,” Mutua said during an interview with Citizen.

He added that the Canadian government was equally disappointed with the Kenyan media.

“While I was in Canada, there are agencies that were telling Kenyans they can offer them jobs in Canada. The minister there told me they have seen agencies from Kenya promising jobs in Kenya. We agreed that I should issue a warning about fake jobs in Canada, then they (the Canadian gov’t) will issue a warning too. I gave my warning, and so did the Canadians. We also released simultaneous statements,” the CS said.

Mutua said talks are ongoing to enable Kenyans to access temporary jobs in Canada.

“It is not mandatory to be educated to get some jobs; Canada operates on a temporary shift module where a farmer could be employed on this season temporarily and get employed in the next season as well.”

He reminded Kenyans that in order to secure a job in Canada, applications should be done correctly.

“You cannot go to Canada and look for a job, you must apply for it while in Kenya,” he said.
