Foreign diplomats visit Kalonzo amid claims of house arrest

Kalonzo holds a private meeting with foreign diplomats even as Azimio leaders claim he's under house arrest

Kalonzo holds a private meeting with foreign diplomats even as Azimio leaders claim he’s under house arrest.

Azimio Co-Principal Kalonzo Musyoka on Friday held a private meeting with a number of diplomats at his home in Karen, Nairobi.

According to reports, the diplomats were from the United Nations, European Union, the United States, and Denmark.

Several diplomatic-plated vehicles were seen living Kalonzo’s Karen home at around midday.

However, details of the closed-door meeting were not immediately disclosed.

The meeting comes in the wake of growing concern from foreign nations and organizations over the widespread violence and loss of life during Azimio anti-government protests.

Diplomats offered to mediate between Raila and President William Ruto to restore peace.

However, on Thursday, July 20, Foreign Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua urged foreign powers to respect Kenya’s democracy.

CS Mutua emphasized that for peace to prevail, Kenya was willing to work with all stakeholders including partners as long as democracy is respected.

Meanwhile, the meeting happened amid claims the Wiper leader was under house arrest.

Speaking to the media on Friday, July 21, National Assembly Minority Leader, Opiyo Wandayi, alleged that the State orchestrated the witchhunt and was out to frustrate other opposition leaders.

According to Wandayi, the former Vice President has been in detention for two days since the protests began on Wednesday, July 19.

“All we know is that Kalonzo Musyoka has been detained for the last two days, and has not been able to leave his house,” Wandayi told journalists.

“Kalonzo is a national leader of repute, but the government decided to lock and block him from going about his businesses. This is unprecedented,” Wandayi added.
