Former 3000m steeplechase star and medalist Jairus Birech is dead
Kenya’s athletics fraternity is mourning the death of former 3000m steeplechase medalist Jairus Kipchoge Birech, who died on Thursday, September 19.
In a statement, Birech’s family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement, announcing that the 32-year-old athlete died at around 8:30 PM.
The family further appealed for support and prayers as they navigate this difficult moment.
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we, the family of Jairus Kipchoge Birech, former 3000m steeplechase athlete, announce his passing. Jairus peacefully went to be with the Lord last night at around 8:30 PM.
“We kindly ask for your prayers and support during this difficult time, as we come to terms with this great loss. May the Lord grant him eternal rest and peace,” the statement read.
Tributes have since poured in from leaders and fellow athletes, recognizing Birech’s remarkable contribution to Kenya’s athletics.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris described Birech as a national treasure who inspired countless young athletes.
“Deeply devastated by the untimely demise of our 3000m steeplechase icon, Jairus Kipchoge Birech. His unwavering commitment and brilliance not only inspired a generation but also fortified our national pride.
“We honour his enduring legacy and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity. Rest in eternal peace, champion,” she said.
Kesses Member of Parliament Julius Rutto echoed the same sentiments, noting that Birech’s legacy will remain etched in Kenya’s athletics history.
“Deeply saddened by the untimely passing of our 3000m steeplechase star, Jairus Kipchoge Birech. His discipline, dedication, and brilliance on the track brought immense pride to our nation.
“We celebrate his legacy and pray for comfort to his family and the athletics fraternity. May he rest in peace,” he remarked.
Former world javelin champion Julius Yego, a close friend, expressed his shock at Birech’s sudden passing.

“My condolences to the family of Jairus Birech and athletics family, we have lost a great champion. It’s too soon—you left us without saying goodbye, Jairus. But it shall be well.
“Just two days ago, we were making plans to do something for you, our friend, but see what life has brought us now. Rest easy, champion,” he noted.
Birech rose to prominence as a junior athlete, winning a silver medal at the 2011 African Junior Athletics Championships and later finishing fourth at the All-Africa Games that same year.
His breakthrough came in 2012 when he began competing in high-profile international meetings, showing consistency on the Diamond League circuit.
However, it was in 2014 that Birech truly established himself among the world’s elite; he claimed the Diamond League title in the steeplechase, secured gold at the African Championships in Marrakech, and earned silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
He also ran a personal best of 7:58.41 in Brussels, breaking the eight-minute barrier and joining the exclusive club of steeplechasers to achieve that feat.
In 2015, Birech remained a dominant force on the circuit, winning several Diamond League races.
Despite his strong form, he narrowly missed out on a medal at the World Championships in Beijing, finishing fourth in a highly competitive final.
As his career progressed, Birech’s appearances on the global stage became less frequent; his last known major race came in 2020 at the Guadalajara Marathon in Mexico.
