Former Governor found guilty of corruption case

Former Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal has been found guilty of a corruption case for receiving Ksh84 million to supply petroleum products to the country during his tenure

Former Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal has been found guilty of a corruption case for receiving Ksh84 million to supply petroleum products to the country during his tenure.

While issuing the ruling on Wednesday, August 28, Magistrate Thomas Nzioki said the evidence produced by the prosecution in court indicated that the former Governor received the money through his proxy.

Lenokulal was convicted alongside his 11 co-accused for unlawful acquisition of public property.

“After considering the submissions of all the parties, I arrive at the conclusion that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. I find Moses Lenolkulal and 11 accused persons jointly guilty, and I convict each one of you for public acquisition of public property,” Nzioki ruled.

Lenolkulal is said to have influenced tenders in Samburu County to favor Oryx Service Station, a company linked to him.

The company supplied fuel to the Samburu County government between 2014 and 2019.

In 2019 Lenolkulal was arrested and charged with abuse of office and graft-related counts before the Milimani anti-corruption magistrate court.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) testified in court that the Oryx Service Station entered into contracts with Samburu County and received Ksh 84 million.

Lenolkulal in his defence said he had openly declared his interest in Oryx Service Station when he was first elected as the Samburu Governor in the 2013 general election.

He later claimed that he leased the station to Hesbon Ndathi to avoid cases of conflict of interest.

The sentencing will be done on Thursday, August 29 at 10:30 am.
