Former Tanzania President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has died aged 98
Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, credited with ushering the East African nation into free market economics, has died at age 98, current President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Thursday in a television broadcast.
Mwinyi succeeded Tanzania’s first post-independence president, Julius Nyerere, who left office in 1985 after 22 years in power.
He was the President of Tanzania between 1985 to 1995.
“On behalf of the government, I would like to convey my condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all Tanzanians for this loss,” President Hassan said.
She revealed that Mwinyi had been undergoing treatment in London, UK, since November 2023 before being transferred back to Tanzania and admitted to Mzena Hospital, where he passed away.
President Suluhu has declared a 7-day mourning period during which flags will be raised at half-mast.

President Suluhu announced that Mwinyi will be buried on March 2, 2024 at Uganja the Highland of Zanzibar.
Mwinyi was credited with introducing free market policies and was in turn succeeded by the late Benjamin Mkapa in 1995.
President Hassan said Mwinyi died in hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was receiving treatment for lung cancer. He had been receiving treatment since November, Hassan said.
His son Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, is the current President of Zanzibar, the Tanzanian archipelago.
Mwinyi was born in May 1925 in the village of Kivure, Pwani Region, where he was also raised.
