Fred Matiang'i cannot be president - Atwoli

COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has played down former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i ambitions to unseat President William Ruto in 2027

Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has played down former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i ambitions to unseat President William Ruto in 2027.

In a video posted on his X platform on Tuesday, January 28, Atwoli stated that he had known Matiang’i, expressing doubt over his State House bid.

On the other hand, he castigated the former CS, claiming that he did not support former Prime Minister Raila Odinga during the 2022 General Elections, despite Odinga’s candidature being supported by the government.

“Can you tell me that Matiang’i can be the President of the Republic of Kenya? I have worked with Matiang’i. He is a tax collector more than Ruto. I know him,” he claimed.

“When we were in Azimio and we were leaving, Matiang’i did not even campaign for Raila. He did not stand up or appear anywhere supporting Raila. They were busy in the office of the President making money. I know them, I was there.”

Meanwhile, he expressed that the alliance between Mating’i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could not win the elections.

He asserted that the trio did not have the political mobilisation power in comparison to a leader like Raila.

Meanwhile, he expressed that he would be opposing Gachagua who he claimed did not have the interest of workers at heart.

“When we made a courtesy call to the President on February 14, 2023, Rigathi told Ruto off and told him that these people did not support us,” he alleged.

“During labour day last year, I invited him to come and have lunch with workers. He refused to come. I will make sure we fight him.”
