DP Gachagua defends CS Murkomen over JKIA leaking roof as he blames Former President Uhuru Kenyatta fpr the mess.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has again accused former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration of the infrastructural challenges at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)

Speaking at the 30th Convention of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the 18th World Council of Engineers at Pride Inn Beach Resort, Mombasa, the DP defended Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for saying that it was Uhuru’s tenure that was to blame for poor work by contractors and engineers.

“I’ve seen some people castigate CS Murkomen because of what he said about JKIA leaking roofs… people in this country are allergic to truth. A massive cost was spent on JKIA but today it’s a shame,” he said.

DP Gachagua lamented the current state of JKIA, saying it brings shame to the engineering and architecture professions.

”JKIA was done at a massive cost but today, it is a shame to the profession of engineers and architects. Public resources were expended, and when you go there, you feel sorry, yet engineers and architects certified, and on the basis of that certification, payments were made,” he said.

DP Gachagua’s remarks came a day after CS Murkomen blamed the former government for the embarrassing leaking roof at the recently renovated international terminals 1C and 1E at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

“When we got into the office we found that the projects in the previous regime were substandard. When the renovation was done on Terminal 1C and E, it was in a hurry and temporary because there needed to be set up an in-field project which was costly. But we have spoken to the contractors to redo the job,” Murkomen said.

CS Murkomen claimed the previous regime handled projects in which substandard works were done; but that contractors will return to the site to fix the mess.

The comments follow a viral video revealing leakage at JKIA, days after a nationwide blackout impacted the airport.
