Gachagua, Kalonzo snub "junior" police officers after failing to meet IG Kanja

DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua and his Wiper counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka were left furious on Monday after they failed to meet Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who, reportedly, instead assigned other top police bosses to meet them.

The leaders, who had arrived alongside DAP-Kenya Party boss Eugene Wamalwa, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru and their supporters at Vigilance House, were shocked to be informed that the police boss, who was to give them answers over the constant attack on their meetings by persons believed to be police officers, was unexplainably absent.

“We have declined to meet junior officers who have been delegated to meet us. It was Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja himself who promised to give us answers about our attacks, but he has gone missing,” said Gachagua.

The opposition leaders promised to come back on Friday this week over the matter. They also alleged that the investigation into their attack at a church service in Othaya on Sunday, February 25, has been completed, and up to 12 police officers and a member of parliament have been identified as the planners of the incident.

“We have been informed by our sources that the investigations into the Othaya church attack have been completed and there are 12 police officers who participated in the attack, including an MP who offered them lunch thereafter,” alleged Gachagua.

The leaders have alleged that the directive to have their meetings disrupted and roadblocks erected on roads leading to their rallies is not coming from Kanja but Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and his Principal Secretary, Raymond Omollo.

“We are aware that it’s Kipchumba Murkomen and Raymond Omollo ordering police to disrupt our meetings and erect illegal roadblocks to roads leading to our rallies. They can take the work of the Inspector General of Police instead of issuing illegal orders,” Gachagua alleged.

According to the leaders, the matter of their attack is of national importance that should not be delegated to “junior officers” in the police.

“We have documented all the abuses from 2023 to date and will be presenting them to the International Criminal Court. We cannot allow such happenings to take place in our country,” said Kalonzo.

They also condemned an attack by police on a political meeting organised by ODM Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and other leaders allied to the Orange party on Sunday in Kitengela.

“We have also received reports that two people have lost their lives in Kitengela town following police disruption of a rally organised by Sifuna. We want to condemn this and ask that those behind this kind of violence be arrested and charged,” claimed Kalonzo.
