The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has announced new maize seed prices ahead of the long rains planting season.
In a letter addressed to the Kenya Seed Company on Tuesday, February 25, the ministry noted that it had received several requests from farmers concerned about increased seed prices.
The Ministry of Agriculture noted that following consultations, the government resolved to maintain the 2024 rates.
“The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, has received several requests from farmers concerning increased prices of maize seeds for the 2025 long rains planting season.
“Upon consultation with your institution and other organs of the government and taking into consideration the government plan on food security, the Ministry is directing that the prices of maize seeds, for the 2025 long rains season, be retained as per the previous year 2024,” the letter read.
As per the directive, one kilogram of maize seeds will retail at Ksh 210, two kilograms at Ksh 420, 10 kilograms at Ksh 2,100 and 25 kilograms at Ksh 5,250.

“The above prices take effect immediately. Ensure that appropriate measures are put in place to disseminate the communication in good time to seed producers, distributors, farmers, and the general public,” the letter added.
The seeds will be sold at Kenya Seed outlets spread across the country.
Kenya Seed was established in 1956, with the primary mission of producing and marketing high-quality certified seeds.
Headquartered in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, the company offers a diverse range of seeds, including maize, wheat, pasture grasses, sunflower, sorghum, finger millet, legumes, rice, groundnuts, simsim (sesame) and various horticultural crops.
In 1979, Kenya Seed Company expanded its operations by acquiring Simpson and White Law, a vegetable seed company now operating under the brand name Simlaw Seeds.
