The New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union PLC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, has launched a Coffee Extension Champions Training Program targeting 1,600 individuals across 32 counties.

In a notice on Tuesday, November 18, the New KPCU said the program is aimed at reviving coffee production within the cooperative movement.

Currently, Kenya’s cooperatives produce 51,852 metric tonnes of coffee annually, but the new initiative aims to increase this to 151,000 metric tonnes.

The training is scheduled to take place at the Coffee Research Institute and various county training centers.

“New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (New KPCU PLC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, invites passionate community rooted individuals to join an intensive Coffee Extension Champions Training Program under the revival of coffee through cooperative societies Campaign,” the notice read.

New KPCU noted that the training offers a pathway to self-employment, as successful trainees will be deployed within their communities to support coffee farmers.

The training lasts one week and includes both theoretical and practical sessions.

In addition, participants will receive a certificate of completion jointly issued by New KPCU and the Coffee Research Institute.

Upon completion, the trained extension champions will play a crucial role in rural communities by offering private extension services, including training on Good Agricultural Practices and rehabilitating neglected coffee farms.

They will also help farmers adopt improved planting materials and organize themselves into cooperatives.

“Extension Champions will levy farmers a reasonable service fee agreed upon at the ward level through cooperatives or farmer groups and approved by the Standing County Technical Committee,” New KPCU explained how the trainees will be compensated for their services.

They added that the fee collection will be conducted transparently through organized channels.

“Champions will work with cooperatives to streamline collection of service fees through cooperative deductions or mobile money payments, ensuring transparency and accountability. Champions are encouraged to enter into formal service agreements with cooperatives or farmer groups,” the notice added.

To qualify for the program, applicants must have at least a certificate in agriculture or a related field and be residents of the wards they intend to serve.

They should also demonstrate a commitment to improving rural livelihoods through sustainable coffee farming and possess strong communication skills.

Experience in coffee farming or cooperatives, and familiarity with digital data tools, is an added advantage.

Applicants are required to submit a detailed CV, academic certificates, national ID, and proof of ward residency, along with a cover letter specifying the ward they wish to serve.

Applications must be addressed to the Managing Director of New KPCU and can be sent via post, email, or hand-delivery.

With the deadline set for 5 PM on Friday, December 5, youth aged between 18 and 35 and persons living with disabilities have been encouraged to apply.

The program is open to candidates from 32 counties, including Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Embu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kajiado, Kericho, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Laikipia and Machakos.
