Karimiru Dam II hits full capacity at 23bn litres of water as the government assures residents downstream of their safety.
Due to intense rainfall that has been reported around the country, the Karemene II Dam in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, has started to overflow.
However, the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) stated that even with the overflow, the dam is built so that the extra water won’t have an impact on people who live downstream.
“The dam is expected to spill over by this Sunday. The spillway design has flood control, and drainage works provide safety to downstream areas against failure by overtopping during the El Nino rains,” the State corporation said in a statement posted on X.
In an update on Saturday, Athi Water Works said the current water volume is 23 billion litres of water.
The authority said the first spilling occurred at 8 am Saturday after the water capacity hit the pilling level of 1,855 feet above sea level.

The spillover happened a day earlier than anticipated according to an update issued on Thursday when the water was 89.9 percent full, holding 20 billion litres of water.
AWWDA added that it has prepared an emergency response plan highlighting all possible failure modes of the dam and their related emergency responses.
“Karimenu II dam starts spilling. We have prepared an emergency response plan that highlights all possible failure modes of the dam and their related emergency responses.”
The dam serves Gatundu, Ruiru, Juja, Githurai, Tatu City, and parts of Nairobi providing more than 70 million litres per day.
This comes shortly after Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir cautioned residents residing downstream of the Kamburu, Kiambere, and Masinga dams to remain vigilant as the man-made water bodies can overflow at any moment.
