Government warns foreign diplomats to respect Kenya’s political democracy amid calls for Ruto-Raila truce.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secreatry Alfred Mutua on July 20 urged diplomats to respect Kenya’s democracy amid calls to broker a cease-fire between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Mutua stated during a meeting with diplomats in Nairobi that the foreign powers must abide by the rules governing diplomatic relations on a global scale.

He did, however, make it clear that the administration was open to having a productive conversation with the opposition.

Mutua emphasized that the administration was equally concerned about the deaths and property damage that were experienced during protests.

“The solution will never come from violent protests but through imaginative solutions. We invite you to be active partners in this journey to reform Kenya.

“I want to assure you of our commitment to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights, and maintain peace and security,” he stated.

In contrast, he asked foreign organizations to confirm information during the protests, citing the case of the Geneva office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

While commenting on issues, the diplomats were urged to follow international precedence.

“This statement was not only inaccurate but misleading and appeared to have been written in support of a propaganda campaign by people opposed to the democratic will of the people.

“The speed at which such an international organization that is meant to thoroughly verify the information published the false information, led to only one conclusion- that the statement was premeditated,” he added.

Mutua was responding to an offer made by the diplomats where they expressed their willingness to support the process of the two leaders reaching a truce.
