Government officials beaten up while enforcing court order
Kiambu County government officials beaten up while enforcing court order in Thika on Sunday morning.
There was chaos in Thika on Sunday morning as goons engaged Kiambu County Government officials in running battles over a newly established market.
The goons, who were reportedly ferried to the market from a different location, attacked security personnel who were on deck to guard the new Ngoliba Trading Centre.
Further reports suggest that the goons were there to protect a contractor who was keen to triumph over a court order regarding the legal rights to construct the complex market.
The security personnel, who have been at the market for a better part of the week, were overwhelmed by the goons, who hurled stones at them, forcing the officers to flee for safety.
Several officers sustained serious head injuries as a result of the attack, while one of the goons has since been cornered and was forced to speak about the attack in the wake of the chaos.
“We had been instructed to protect the market as it was being constructed to ensure there is peace,” one of the goons said.
The new Ngoliba market has been marred by controversy ever since Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a flagged its construction in 2024. Notably, there have been conflicting reports on who would oversee the project, with sections claiming it was the county government’s jurisdiction.

Tensions have been high in the week leading up to the chaos, especially after the heavy police presence at the market following its launch last Thursday by Ng’ang’a, alongside Ngoliba MCA Joachim Njama and Nominated MCA Susan Mburu.
During the launch, supporters of the MP arrived in branded merchandise, seemingly to send a message to a political adversary.
One Thika Town resident claimed tensions have been high since the launch, alleging that over 50 officers had been deployed to block traders and the county government from accessing the market.
Despite tensions between the lawmaker and the county government, Ng’ang’a has vowed to continue with development projects across her constituency, including Gatuanyaga, Kiganjo, Maguguni, and Landless.
“Let no one panic; development cannot be stopped,” the lawmaker said last Thursday during the launch of the KSh50 million project as she accused her political rivals of panicking because of her development track record.
