Foreign affairs department issues checklist of what to be observed by Kenyans while seekin job opportunities abroad to avoid falling victims to fraudsters.

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs, under the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has cautioned Kenyans to follow due process before boarding a flight to pursue employment opportunities overseas. 

This followed several reports of incidents where Kenyans seeking jobs abroad lost their money while others found themselves in difficult situations, unable to return home.

While calling on Kenyans to observe caution, the government released a checklist of things to observe to avoid falling victim to fraudulent travel businesses. 

According to the department, before you can go abroad for work, if dealing with an agent, confirm whether the agency is registered and licenced by the National Employment Authority by visiting

“Follow the due process of getting a job abroad. Ensure you have done an interview, you have received an offer letter, and you have accepted the offer. Ensure you have received and signed a contract, you have personally been attested by the Ministry of Labour, you have received a visa and air ticket, and you have received pre-departure training,” the checklist read in part. 

The government advised Kenyans to be sure of the work duties and responsibilities they have secured in the foreign country. 

“What is the job, who is the employer, how much is the pay, how will you be paid, and what is the employer’s address and contact,” the list continued. 

Checklist

The department recommended ensuring: 

You have a work permit; 

You have a valid, renewable visa depending on your work duration; 

You know where exactly you are going to stay upon arrival; 

You know who is hosting you when you arrive; 

You have enough money to cover your return back to Kenya in case of an emergency. 

You have contacts of the Kenya High Commission or Embassy of your country of destination.
