Government revokes the registration of Pastor Ezekiel’s church in a move to crack down on religious institutions.

The registration of the Newlife Prayer Centre and Church linked to Pastor Ezekiel Odero and was recently the subject of a money laundering and cult investigation, has been revoked by the Registrar of Societies.

In a move to crack down on religious organizations, Pastor Ezekiel’s Kilifi-based center is one of five churches whose registrations have been canceled.

Helicopter of Christ Church, Theophilus Church, Kings Outreach Church, and Goodnews International Ministries are among other churches that have had their registration revoked.

Helicopter of Christ Church is run by Thomas Wahome. He was recently accused of grabbing Nairobi Dam land.

Kings Outreach Church broke away from the umbrella churches associated with Prophet David Owuor.

Goodnews International Ministries is owned by controversial Shakahola cult leader Pastor Paul Mackenzie, in whose church premises over 450 bodies have been exhumed.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 12 (1) of the Societies Act, the Registrar of Societies cancels the registration of the societies specified in the first column of the Schedule, with effect from the respective dates specified in the third column of the Schedule,” Registrar of Societies Maria Nyariki.

The deregistration exercise comes barely months after the government accused Pastor Ezekiel of taking part in criminal activities.

He was detained on April 27 and appeared in court on suspicion of conspiring to commit a crime and money laundering, but no official charges were brought against him.

Pastor Ezekiel denied all the charges against him. He has maintained that he is innocent and that he is being framed by his enemies.
