Government sets new maize seed prices
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has subsidised maize seed prices for the upcoming planting season, as part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance food security nationwide.
In a statement on Thursday, March 12, Principal Secretary Dr Kipronoh Ronoh revealed that the government has allocated Ksh.2 billion to subsidise maize seeds for the 2025/2026 financial year.
The initiative aims to make high-quality maize seeds more affordable for farmers across the country, ensuring increased productivity and stable food supplies.
According to the new guidelines, the subsidised prices are set at Ksh.250 for 1 Kilogram, Ksh. 500 for 2 Kilograms, Ksh.2,500 for 10 kilograms, and Ksh.6,000 for a 25-kilogram bag.

These adjustments, the Ministry said, are effective immediately and are expected to ease the financial burden on farmers during the planting season.
Dr Ronoh emphasised that the move seeks to empower smallholder farmers and boost agricultural productivity.
He urged seed distributors and farmers to adhere to the new pricing regime to foster food security and support Kenya’s national development goals.
The Ministry also called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure the effective distribution of subsidised seeds and to maximise the benefits of this initiative.
