National Treasury to release an additional Ksh 500 million to Moi University after an initial amount of Ksh 609 million in October 2024.

The Moi University fraternity has received a significant financial boost after the National Assembly’s Education Committee Chairperson revealed that the Treasury released funds to the University.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, October 18, the National Assembly’s Education Committee’s Chairperson Julius Melly revealed that the National Treasury had released Ksh 609 million for the University in October 2024.

“The National Treasury has released Ksh 609 million in October 2024 to Moi University”, the MP said.

In order to cushion the University from further cash crunch, the MP revealed that the university will be receiving an additional Ksh 500 Million in November 2024.

“The National Treasury will avail an additional Ksh 500 million to Moi University by November 15th 2024”, the MP continued.

According to Julius Melly, a committee will be constituted to ensure that the institution uses the money responsibly.

“A caretaker committee will be constituted to strengthen the management of Moi University during the recovery period,” he communicated.

This move follows a rigorous debate over the situation in the University that has forced education to halt for over two weeks after it closed down.

Lecturers at the institution downed their tools over unpaid salaries, casual workers also went on strike forcing the management to direct students to vacate the university.

The Committee has recommended that the University be reopened on November 4 to protect the students from losing any more time that should otherwise be used for studying.

“The committee has recommended that Moi University should reopen on November 4, 2024.”

Before reopening the, University staff will be required to sign a return to work formula, “To facilitate the reopening, it is to be noted that staff unions will need to sign a return to work formula to promote consensus and set the stage for reopening and inter-ministerial committee comprising the Ministry of Education, National Treasury and Ministry of Labour”, Melly clarified.

Furthermore, the committee has directed the University to increase revenue from the farm, idle assets, short-term training, consultancies, endowment funds, and research. To, protect the revenue expected from income-generating activities over the next three years.

The university administration has also been directed to augment exchequer resources with enhanced own-source revenue to increase the institution’s revenue.

As far as pending bills go, the University has been directed to to negotiate a priority payment plan with staff and creditors and further to pay the current pending bills progressively.
