Government will not offer University sponsorship to all top KCSE candidates, Education CS

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has announced that not all the 173,345 KCSE candidates who scored C+ and above will get government University sponsorship
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has announced that not all the 173,345 KCSE candidates who scored C+ and above will get government University sponsorship.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, January 21, Machogu said that despite the number of students tripling over the previous six years, funding levels have remained constant.
The Ministry only receives 25% of the money, according to the Education CS, thus it must take strict precautions to solely provide for the poor.
“The level of funding has remained the same yet the number has more than doubled since 2016. The Ministry of Education (MoE) takes 25 percent of the national budget. If we are to sponsor everybody, it could rise to 35 percent,” he told Nation.
The CS further stated that considering the surge in the number of students taking national exams, the government has yet to develop a mechanism for funding universities.
He reaffirmed that the proposals from the presidential task force, whose final report is anticipated to be presented in March 2023, would be used by his Ministry.

The Ministry reports that 173,345 KCPE applicants who received grades of C+ or higher were given admission to a university.
However, the CS has stated that the government is unable to provide sponsorship for every student.
President William Ruto had earlier while addressing journalists at State indicated that a new policy would be formulated to allow the government to only support students who cannot afford funds.
“We have students in academies who pay Ksh200,000 a term but when they go to university, we tell them we can pay for all of them. Why?
“If a parent is able to pay for their child in primary and in secondary, why don’t we allow them to pay for their child in university so that we support the children of the people who cannot afford,” Ruto previously stated.
