Government will prioritize employment of interns and graduates who have worked or working with volunteer organizations.

On Sunday, May 29, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the government to give priority to interns and graduates who had volunteered with groups such as St John’s Ambulance.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, where he presided over the 92nd inspection parade of the St John Ambulance Kenya, he opined that youth who do voluntary work display social responsibility.

He claimed that the country needed to respect volunteerism and the value it offered to the country, and that the practice would be instilled in future leaders through the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

“I further call upon our Government institutions to grant preference to interns and attachés who have certified volunteer experience from certified charitable organizations such as St. John.

“By placing a value on volunteerism, we shall be nurturing a higher calling and building a strong sense of civic responsibility amongst the leaders of today and tomorrow,” he explained.

Uhuru, who is also the Chief Patron of St John’s, praised the humanitarian organization as an example of the positive impact that voluntary labor can have on society.

He praised the group for its contribution to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

He added that the institution was working on a program to provide road users with first aid training, with the pilot program aiming to teach 200 bodaboda riders in the skill.

“Since St John Ambulance was started in Kenya back in 1923, it has led the way in the provision of ambulance and paramedical services. Following your lead, many more ambulance services in the public and private sphere have sprung up,” the President stated.

President Kenyatta announced a Ksh50 million annual Government sponsorship for the organization starting with Ksh100 million this financial year.
