The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) raises concern over the life safety of Kisii Governor Simba Arati after chaos erupted at his event in South Mugirango.

In reaction to a recent wave of violence at an event that Kisii Governor Simba Arati organized and attended, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has demanded the immediate transfer of Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kasses, further alleging that the county chief’s life is in danger.

In a statement on Friday, January 12, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna demanded the IG transfer the Kisii County Commander, Mr. Kasses who was accused of colluding with Osoro to allegedly attack the governor.

Sifuna intimated that Mr. Kasses and officers under his command reportedly turned a blind eye to the violence that erupted at two separate events organized by Arati on January 6 and January 8, 2024.

The party SG maintained that the governor’s life was still in danger, adding that all officers involved in the shooting needed to be removed from the police service.

Sifuna says that the incident was reported at Nyamarambe police station but none of the known culprits have since been arrested.

According to Sifuna, Governor Arati has been attacked two times and the matter was reported but no action has been taken place.

In addition, Sifuna questioned why Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki was silent over the issue.

“We take note of the loud silence of the CS in charge of national security and the inspector general of police. It is this silence, coupled with the fact that no action has been taken,”read the statement in part.

“The ODM party expresses serious concern about the life and safety of its National Vice-Chair and Kisii Governor Simba Arati following repeated violent attacks perpetrated by known persons in broad daylight with what appears to be tacit support and collaboration with elements in the security forces,” said the Nairobi Senator.

Sifuna further asserted that four of the so-called goons acting on Osoro’s orders were members of the National Police Service.

“It turned out that those gunmen were police officers. One of the officers captured firing at the crowd with an AK47 rifle was identified as one Kevin Lagat of Force Number 26085, he is a police constable attached to Osoro,” he added.

“Others are Simon Muriithi of force number 119319 and Peter Muge of force number 239197, all stationed at Nyanchwa Police Station. One officer, Morris Kiambi, is believed to have been ferried from his station of duty in Lang’ata, Nairobi to participate in the attacks. It is suspected that Lagat has been transferred to Parliament Police Station since that incident.”

As a result, the Nairobi Senator demanded that the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome transfer the Kisii County Police Commander immediately, action to be taken against officers identified in the attack, and be interdicted as they await their date with Justice.

Sifuna also demanded South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro to be summoned and write a statement over the incident and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to commence investigations into the abuse of police power in Kisii County.

“These must happen within the next 14 days failing which the Party will pursue other avenues to ensure law and order in Kisii,” Sifuna stated.

“Should any harm come to our party’s National Vice Chair and Governor of Kisii Simba Arati, as a result of any subsequent attack against him, the persons named here including Osoro, Police Commander Charles Kasses, and the IG of Police will be held personally responsible,” he added.

Arati’s bursary function in Waitanga, South Mugirango was on Monday disrupted after goons stormed the event and fired gunshots.

The locals who had come to receive bursaries from the Kisii Governor were forced to run for their dear lives.

At least four people were injured during the incident and several cars were destroyed.
