MP Peter Salasya whisked to safety after being attacked by goons while addressing a congregation in Mumias.

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya was whisked to safety on Sunday after an attack by goons following controversial remarks directed to Kakamega Governor, Fernandes Barasa.

Salasya was calling out Governor Fernandezs Barasa over the reviving of the sugar sector in the Western region when he was suddenly attacked, throwing the entire event into pandemonium.

In a viral video, the MP could be seen addressing Mumias residents about the state of the sugar industry in the region and how politics had contributed to the fall of the once thriving economic sector.

During the event, Salasya accused Kakamega Governor, Fernandes Barasa, also in attendance, of not doing enough to revive the ailing sector.

The MP particularly took issue with the fact that Barasa’s predecessor, Wycliffe Oparanya, had proposed a Bill that would allow the County Government to pay farmers Ksh100 million which he used as a stick to beat Barasa with.

Shortly after, the MP was attacked by goons, who the MP, alleged were sponsored by a senior politician from the region.

During the scuffle, the MP was hounded out of the stage, roughed up, and almost pinned down by the goons which brought the event to a standstill.

However, during the scuffle Salasya’s security detail drew guns while whisking him away for safety.

In his social media post, Salasya blamed the governor for the chaos that ensued, accusing him of sending the rowdy youths who almost harmed him.

”The goons of this Governor of Kakamega Fernandes Barasa attacked me so innocently while addressing residents of Mumias West, but thank you my tight security for ensuring no one moves closer to me to attack me,” the MP remarked in a statement afterward.

The MP has been vocal on the matters sugar sector and has been advocating for the prioritization of sugarcane farmers and payment of their dues.

The MP was challenging the current Governor to implement reforms initiated by Oparanya that advocated for the interests of cane farmers and the revival of the Mumias Sugar Company.

During President William Ruto’s meeting with the Western region’s leaders at Kakamega state lodge on Wednesday, August 30, the lawmaker did not hold back, tearing into Barasa’s leadership and conduct.

At the time, the MP alleged that the Governor had been siding with investors who wanted to exploit the sugar sector at the expense of farmers.
