The Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has addressed a viral TikTok video that sparked speculation online, with many social media users claiming she appeared to be crying.

Speaking during an interview with TV47 on Monday, March 9, the Public Health PS dismissed the claims, explaining that the clip only captured a moment of personal reflection rather than tears.

Muthoni said the pressures that come with working in public health often lead her to reflect deeply about the challenges facing communities across the country.

“And I can tell you for a fact, having worked in public health, I have too many reflections to do. Every day, by the way, I worry about somebody else,” she said.

The PS noted that recent events, including floods that have affected several areas, have weighed heavily on her mind as she continues to monitor the situation.

“The other day I saw people being swept by the floods,” she said.

She added that public health officials constantly grapple with multiple concerns, including disease outbreaks and humanitarian crises affecting vulnerable populations.

“You know, and having looked at how much we have done, and then I am seeing outbreaks of malaria, diseases, these are things that keep me awake at night,” she said.

Muthoni insisted that the video circulating online was misunderstood and that her expression should not have been interpreted as crying.

“I wasn’t crying. I want to say we reflect differently. I wasn’t crying,” she said.

She further explained that the day the video was recorded had been emotionally difficult, particularly after seeing the hardships some Kenyans were facing following the floods.

“Saturday was a sad day. It is when people did not have anything to eat, probably because their kiosks had been swept away,” she said.

Her remarks come after the clip circulated widely on social media, prompting mixed reactions from users who speculated about the PS’s emotional state.
