The High Court has ordered the detention of Constables Masinde Klinzy Barasa and Duncan Kiprono for 15 days.

The ruling was issued on Thursday, June 19, following the arraignment of the two officers at Milimani High Court over the shooting of Boniface Kariuki, a mask vendor in the CBD.

Following the ruling, the duo will be held at the Capitol Hill Police Station. 

Notably, the prosecution had requested more time to complete their investigations into the shooting incident.

The matter will be mentioned on July 3 to establish the progress of the investigations.

Barasa is the officer believed to have fired the shot at the vendor. Kiprono was alongside his colleague at the time of the incident.

The shooting of the vendor, who is still at the ICU at the Kenyatta National Hospital, has sparked an uproar among Kenyans and the international community.

Consequently, the officers were interdicted and arrested.

“The two officers have now been interdicted and are currently being processed by the Homicide Team, DCI Headquarters, pending further action,” read the statement in part.

“The National Police Service (NPS) deeply regrets this unjustified act and commiserates with the victim and his family, while reaffirming its full commitment to ensuring justice is served.”
