Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a woman in Mombasa over staging a robbery against her British boyfriend.

In a statement on Tuesday, November 11, DCI said the suspect, identified as Samira Mumbi Kiarie, wooed the Briton for months before she lured him into her apartment in Nyali for a ‘dream date’.

“The suspect, Samira Mumbi Kiarie, aka Samira, had been wooing the Briton for months on the net, charming him with promises of everlasting love.

“Blinded by affection, the man packed his confidence and visited her posh apartment in Nyali, oblivious that he was walking into a scripted heist,” read the statement in part.

Barely minutes into the date, the door of the apartment burst open and two men stormed in, one claiming to be Samira’s furious husband and the other flashing a fake police ID.

According to DCI, the alleged husband of Samira accused the British of wrecking his home while the fake police officer threatened to arrest him.

The foreigner was then coerced into transferring Ksh800,000 to mobile phone numbers provided by the gang.

“Once the cash landed, the trio calmly escorted their victim out before vanishing into Mombasa’s humid night like ghosts after payday,” said the DCI.

Detectives launched investigations and, acting on forensic leads, they apprehended Samira and one of her accomplices, Paul Webster Mangeni, aka Paulo.

Investigations have since established that the two are part of a notorious syndicate that lures foreigners through dating sites, sets them up in Airbnbs, and robs them of their hard-earned money.

The two suspects are in police custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment in court. Meanwhile, the sleuths are pursuing the third suspect, who is still at large.

The incident comes months after detectives arrested a Kenyan man who robbed a Greek national.

According to the DCI, the female Greek tourist landed in Kenya on August 5 and was to meet the suspect, who has been identified as Okello Oyugi.

The two had made a connection via social media, with Oyugi hiding his identity; he called himself “Jeremiah John”.

Upon their meetup, they proceeded to the Maasai Game Park, where Oyugi plotted against the woman.

It is during their expedition at the Maasai Mara that “Jeremiah” robbed the foreigner. The suspect stole the tourist’s three debit cards, a mobile phone, and a wristwatch.

Using the debit cards, he withdrew 25,000 Euros (equivalent to Ksh3.7 million) from the tourist’s bank account.

The suspect was traced in his hideout and taken into police custody. The detectives recovered mobile phones, cash in US dollars, and a wristwatch.
