Cult leader Paul Mackenzie deliberately changed the names of his followers making it difficult to be traced.
Rescue efforts at the Shakahola Forest in Kilifi County are ongoing, but confusion abounds at the Kenya Red Cross tracing desk as families struggle to recognize their saved relatives as a result of what officials believe to be a planned cult strategy to change the identities of their followers.
It has since been discovered that most of the individuals who adhered to Paul Mackenzie had changed their names, making it difficult to identify them.
Coast Region Red Cross chief Hassan Musa admitted that identifying and reuniting the victims with their families is difficult and slow considering that most of the victims rescued from the forest have no identity documents.
Authorities suspect that the change of names was a deliberate plan by the cult leaders to make it difficult to trace their followers.
