Raila recounts the day he was arrested in Nigeria owing to his “resemblance” to the people of Nigeria according to police.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has revealed how he was once arrested by police officers in Nigeria’s capital, Lagos.

In 2003, while on official duty in Nigeria as an election observer, Raila recalled an incident in which the police had questioned him for being in a restricted area where the public had been prohibited as part of the voting process.

He claimed that the police had tried to arrest him due to his “resemblance” to Nigerians, but his driver saved the day.

“One time I was arrested in Lagos when I was observing an election… I was told that don’t you know that today people are not allowed to be driving? The driver told him – I’m carrying Oga (my boss),” Raila said.

The former prime minister claimed that the policeman insisted he was a Nigerian even after he told them he wasn’t and told him to stop lying to them.

“Eventually when I showed them my passport, they realized I’m not a Nigerian,” Mr. Odinga recounted.

The ODM party leader recalled the incident in his address during the 2022 Leadership Conference and Awards on Tuesday.

The conference comes ahead of the February 25 General Election in the West African country.

“We want to urge Nigerians to stand firm and to ensure that the voice of the people is respected. The voice of the people is the voice of God,” Raila said.

The ODM leader emphasized that in Kenya’s presidential election last year, was undermined by individual he did not name to subvert the will of the people.

At a political event on Sunday in Nairobi’s Jacaranda grounds, Mr. Odinga claimed that his Azimio coalition had won the election while once again citing a dossier from an unnamed whistleblower working for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
