Prosecution seeks maximum sentence for six suspects accused of poisoning Thika MP, George Thuo to death using pesticide.
Milimani High Court on Tuesday, May 28, was petitioned by the prosecution to hand the maximum sentence to six people who were found guilty of killing former Juja Member of Parliament George Thuo.
George Thuo met his untimely death in 2013 moments after visiting a popular restaurant in Thika Town, Kiambu County.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) convinced the High Court beyond any reasonable doubt that the MP died after being poisoned using Cyhalothrine Pesticide.
Cyhalothrine is a readily available pesticide in the agricultural county of Kiambu. It is used to control pests attacking farm crops and vegetables.
“The prosecution informed the court that the convicted individuals showed no remorse and thus should not be granted leniency,” ODPP stated the need for the maximum sentence.
ODPP further petitioning the High Court to meet the maximum sentence requested consideration of statements from Thuo’s family.

Speaking in court, Thuo’s wife told the judge that her husband was in good health before his unexpected death.
She further confirmed that her husband passed on while in the company of the six convicted individuals.
“According to the probation officer’s report, the victim’s family called for a fairly lengthy sentence, emphasizing the need for justice,” ODPP reported.
The court will deliberate on the prayers made by the prosecution side and deliver a sentence to the six individuals on June 21, 2024.
According to the Penal Code, a person convicted of murder can be handed a death sentence.
Kenyan has been moving from retributive justice to restorative justice, and as such, most death penalties are commuted to life imprisonment.
