I picked Martha Karua to be my successor despite not being my friend, Pre Uhuru Kenyatta
Pre Uhuru Kenyatta has revealed why he settled on Matha Karua to be Raila’s running mate and Mt Kenya successor despite her not being his friend.
Speaking to a group of religious leaders from all Mt Kenya counties on Friday, July 8, at State House, Uhuru Kenyatta indicated that Martha Karua will be her successor in the Mt Kenya region.
President Uhuru Kenyatta revealed that he settled on Karua to be Raila Odinga’s running mate for the August polls.
Uhuru lauded Karua as a leader who could be trusted to put the interests of the nation first saying he had confidence in her ability to safeguard the region’s interests.
“I settle on Karua, not because she’s my friend…in fact, you all know Martha and myself hardly agreed on anything there before. She even ran against me in 2012.
But I settled on her because I have full confidence that our community is in safe hands,” Uhuru said.
“Despite the fact that we have never been on the same side politically with Martha, she is just and principled.
“It is better I follow someone who is principled who is just, truthful and led by the desire to serve people but not self,” the President stated in reference to Karua.
Karua was unveiled as Raila’s running mate on Monday, May 16, in a colourful event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
Other leaders from Mt Kenya who were eyeing the running mate position were former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, Agriculture CS Peter Munya, and Murang’a woman rep Sabina Chege.
