IEBC chair Erastus Ethekon is a puppet of President Ruto; Miguna Miguna
Lawyer Miguna Miguna has come out against the newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Erastus Ethekon, accusing him of lacking independence and being a puppet of President William Ruto.
In an interview on Sunday, July 13, Miguna said Ethekon’s past affiliations and the manner of his appointment compromise the integrity of IEBC.
He noted that Ethekon, who worked under Deputy Chief of Staff Josphat Nanok during his tenure as Turkana governor, was selected by Ruto to further his political interests.
“IEBC Chair Erastus Ethekon is tethered, this man is not independent, this man worked for Josphat Nanok in Turkana, this man was headhunted by President William Ruto like he does to all so-called independent constitutional bodies to come and chair the IEBC. This IEBC is made in the image of Ruto,” he claimed.
Miguna compared Ethekon’s appointment to past appointments of electoral commission chairs, warning that history is repeating itself.
“Anybody who expects this cloned IEBC to preside over credible, fair and transparent elections is in some dreamland. I warned the country against Samuel Kivuitu, Issack Hassan, Wafula Chebukati and it came to pass.
“I am now warning Kenyans that this clone from Turkana and his group of Ruto tethered commissioners that these are not independent but dependent commissioners. These people are coming in as the coronation choir for Ruto,” he added.
This comes barely a day after IEBC condemned claims of electoral malpractice, calling them unacceptable and reckless.
In a statement on Sunday, July 13, the commission expressed concern over such statements, noting that they undermine public confidence in the commission.

“The Commission is concerned about statements on election malpractices in the country. Such utterances are unacceptable and reckless in a democratic society such as ours, and IEBC urges all Kenyans to ignore or disassociate with them,” the statement read.
Now under new leadership and fully constituted, IEBC said it is currently working towards rebuilding public trust.
“IEBC is now fully constituted and will engage with stakeholders including the political parties and leaders to discuss means and ways of restoring trust and confidence in our electoral processes and outcomes,” the statement added.
Additionally, IEBC urged politicians to exercise responsibility and avoid fueling unnecessary tension and suspicion.
“The Commission urges all stakeholders particularly those in the political arena to refrain from acts including speeches likely to erode trust and confidence in our electoral processes, and instead work with us to reinforce and strengthen that trust and confidence,” the statement further read.
