The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed reports that it is planning to register 3.5 million voters in North Eastern.

In a social media post on Monday, July 14, the electoral body flagged a post circulating online claiming that the IEBC was planning to register new voters in the North Eastern region.

The fake post falsely claimed that the new IEBC Chairperson, Erustus Edung, had announced a plan to register over 3.5 million new voters in the North Eastern region, citing recent reforms in immigration laws that had previously hindered the process.

On July 5, IEBC flagged another social media post that alleged that the commission was targeting certain regions in an alleged plan to erase at least two million people from the voters’ roll.

The fake statement indicated that supposed ghost voters would be erased from the register, targeting a section of regions in Mt Kenya.

IEBC on July 13 condemned claims of electoral malpractice, calling them unacceptable and reckless.

The electoral body warned politicians against making claims of voter rigging, saying that they undermine public confidence in the commission.

“The Commission is concerned about statements on election malpractices in the country. Such utterances are unacceptable and reckless in a democratic society such as ours, and IEBC urges all Kenyans to ignore or disassociate with them,” IEBC stated.

The commission pointed out that the country is not yet in an election period, and therefore, discussions of rigging or campaigns are premature and unfounded.

“The Commission urges all stakeholders, particularly those in the political arena, to refrain from acts, including speeches, likely to erode trust and confidence in our electoral processes, and instead work with us to reinforce and strengthen that trust and confidence,” IEBC added.
