IEBC confirms receiving petitions to recall 4 MPs

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) now says it has received four requests to have certain Members of Parliament recalled from their positions
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) now says it has received four requests to have certain Members of Parliament recalled from their positions.
Addressing the press in Mombasa County on Friday, July 18, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the requests would be considered based on the weight of the matters raised.
He went on to affirm that Kenyans are legally entitled to recall an MP, provided that the reasons given by the citizens are legitimate under the Constitution.
Ethekon assured Kenyans that the electoral body would uphold the Constitution in dealing with such matters, emphasising that IEBC would only act within the limits of the law.
“Kenyans are actively discussing this subject of recall. So, currently we have received roughly four applications, and we will look at them once we get back to the office,” Ethekon said.
“It is the right of every Kenyan to exercise their right to recall an MP as per the Constitution, and as the electoral board, we will do what the law allows us to do,” he added.
Ethekon also announced that the electoral body would soon commence conducting the pending by-elections in several sub-counties across the country.

He noted that the IEBC would work jointly with Parliament and political parties to address the issue of pending by-elections in the next few days. “This is our priority,” he said.
Meanwhile, the IEBC Chairperson’s sentiments come days after a section of North Imenti Constituency residents began collecting signatures to recall their MP, Rahim Dawood.
Among the reasons cited for the recall are the MP’s vote in favour of the 2024 Finance Bill and his failure to exercise oversight by addressing their concerns during routine parliamentary sessions.
Further, Dawood found himself at odds with the residents over his controversial decision to vote in favour of the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
To further exacerbate the situation, the disgruntled residents accused the lawmaker of failing to lobby for budgetary allocations to complete stalled national government projects in Meru.
