IEBC declares William Ruto as the president-elect of the republic of Kenya despite four of its commissioners disowning the results.
William Samoei Ruto has been declared the duly elected President of Kenya by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati made the announcement at the Bomas of Kenya on Monday, August 15, 2022.
He declared William Ruto as the President-elect of Kenya after gathering 7,176,141 votes – 50.49% nationally against his arch-rival Raila Odinga who gathered 6,942,930 votes – 48.85%.
“In accordance with the Constitution and the law, chairperson of IEBC hereby declare that Ruto William Samoei has been duly elected as the President of the Republic of Kenya under the provision of Article 138 of the Constitution of the Presidential election held on August 9, 2022,” said he said.
IEBC declared William Ruto as the president-elect despite four of its commissioners disowning the presidential results.
The four led by commissioner Juliana Cherera said they cannot take ownership of the results because of the opaque nature they have been handled.
Juliana Cherera together with Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyangaya, and Irene Masit, refused to take ownership and sign the results owing to the opaque nature of the final process of verification of the results.
“We have done the 2022 general election in the most efficient manner. We have ensured that all the challenges have been contained,” commissioner Juliana Cherera said during a hastily arranged press briefing at Serena Hotel.
There was drama before Mr. Ruto was declared the winner.
Azimio la Umoja Presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s chief agent, Saitabao Ole Kanchuri, intimated that the systems used by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to tally the results of the presidential contest were compromised ahead of the official announcement by the electoral body.
