SMS numbers to verify voter registration details
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has launched SMS numbers through which voters can verify their registration details.
IEBC made the announcement, on Tuesday, August 2, as it confirmed that the gazetted register is now in polling stations for voters to check their details ahead of next week’s elections, as required by the law.
The commission indicated that this will enable Kenya’s 22.1 million registered voters across 46,229 polling stations to know where they will be voting on Tuesday, August 9.
“Several people will definitely go to the polling stations on August 9 thinking that their names are in that register as begin to accuse IEBC of removing their names. An opportunity had been given to them during the verification to correct that. If they did not do that, there is no way the commission will allow them to vote,” said commissioner Justus Nyang’aya.
“The register has already been gazetted. If you are not in the register, you will not vote. You will come to vote in 2027,” added commissioner Abdi Guliye.
IEBC has insisted that the electronic register will be the first point of reference on election day.
The manual register is meant to complement the digital register in case the KIEMS kit fails.
SMS numbers to verify voter registration details, How to verify
Kenyans can verify information of their registration by sending SMS or using the portal, according to an IEBC statement.
This can be done by sending their passport numbers or National identity card numbers and year of birth on toll numbers 1543, 1544, and 70000.
Alternatively, Kenyans can visit the IEBC voter verification portal and insert their details on the electronic platform.
