Police IG Koome announces heavy police deployment on highways ahead Of school re-opening

On Saturday, April 27, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome oversaw the placement of police and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) personnel alongside important thoroughfares.

In a statement, Koome mentioned that the cops will make sure there is law and order on the roadways before the schools reopen in the wake of the recent torrential rains, which have caused a big disaster on Kenyan roads.

Along with advising drivers to exercise caution, the police chief also asked them to collaborate with law enforcement and other multi-agency personnel stationed on different roadways.

Additionally, it has been recommended that both bus drivers and Bodaboda users abide by traffic laws and not break any of them.

“In the best interest of children that will be traveling back to school, and for the safety of the general public, the National Police Service would like to caution all motorists and boda boda riders to be extra vigilant on the roads, and strictly comply with traffic regulations and rules,” the statement read in part.

The Inspector General mentioned recent flooding-related calamities and said that many lives had been lost as a result of the roads being impassable and the estates becoming uninhabitable, respectively.

“It is expected that road traffic, both human and vehicular, will be very heavy next week.”

Since the start of the intense rains, the government reports that 75 people have died in the nation, leaving 22 people missing.

Speaking on Friday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said that Ksh4 billion had been granted by the government to lessen the tragedy. She urged Kenyans to exercise caution and refrain from acting recklessly.

“We appeal to Kenyans to be responsible for their own lives and safety. Do not dare nature. In some instances, we have seen people being adventurous and daring to cross swollen rivers,” Gachagua stated.

“We urge Kenyans to exercise caution and be responsible for their own lives. They must know they carry the aspirations of their families.”

The second in command also ordered schools that are not impacted by the current flooding to return on time, as scheduled by the authorities
