Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has signaled his readiness to rally behind Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should the opposition unite and endorse him as their presidential flagbearer in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the Wiper National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at Uhuru Park on Friday, Matiang’i emphasised the need for the opposition coalition to put aside personal ambitions in favor of a unified front capable of challenging President William Ruto.
“We have agreed we must put ambition and everything else before the interest of this country,” Matiang’i told delegates.
“When we sit together and the united opposition decides that you (Kalonzo) will be the candidate, I will support you, and we will support you.”
He went on to affirm that the process of selecting a joint opposition candidate must be consultative and inclusive, stressing the importance of unity in confronting the ruling coalition.
“I believe when that time comes, when we all sit together, consult everybody, and a method is found of identifying a candidate, we should all rally behind that individual. If that person is yourself, we will support and back you,” Matiang’i added.
The Presidential hopeful underscored that forging a formidable opposition alliance requires patience, compromise, and strategic alignment.
“Building an opposition or coalition is a journey of alignments and coming together. We will be together in spite of our differences, not because we don’t have differences. We will work on this together,” he stated.

The remarks come at a time when momentum is building within opposition circles to consolidate their efforts under a single presidential candidate ahead of 2027.
Despite internal divisions and cracks witnessed in recent months, key leaders have continued to signal a willingness to work together.
Friday’s NDC drew several prominent figures, including Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua, and other senior politicians seen as potential contenders for the presidency.
Their presence at each other’s events has been widely interpreted as an attempt to project solidarity despite lingering questions about who will eventually fly the opposition flag.
Kalonzo Musyoka, a veteran politician and former Vice President, has emerged as one of the leading figures being considered to challenge President Ruto in the next election.
