Inside Uhuru, Raila, Kalonzo crisis meeting to avert Azimio fallout
Uhuru, Raila, Kalonzo crisis meeting to avert Azimio fallout after ODM-Jubilee clash over parliamentary leadership positions.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Azimio leader Raila Odinga, and Wiper Party’s Kalonzo Musyoka convened a crisis meeting to avert a looming fallout within the coalition over parliamentary leadership positions.
Enoch Wambua, Kitui senator, stated that the Azimio senate leadership and the leaders of the coalition parties met in Raila’s office in Nairobi on Monday, November 14.
He disclosed that Raila Odinga chaired the meeting in which the disquiet arising from the cancellation of Senator Fatuma Dullo’s nomination to the Parliamentary Service Commission featured.
“Raila chaired the meeting, Uhuru was represented physically by Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni and Kalonzo joined us virtually,” Wambua said.
Reports that the dissatisfaction among Jubilee elected leaders over the last-minute adjustment had reached a point of splitting the coalition were downplayed by Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo.
“We had a very fruitful discussion with our principals and the little issue that we had has been sorted. We want to make it very clear that as Azimio in the Senate, we are one team,” Madzayo reiterated.
He affirmed that the coalition’s interests in the senate will be represented using one voice – a position shared by Dullo, who was part of the team addressing the media.
On November 11, a number of Jubilee elected leaders led by Sabina Chege, Deputy Whip of the Minority in the National Assembly protested the aggressive actions of ODM.
They denounced the selection of Senator Okong’o Omogeni, claiming it was unjust for Odinga’s party to win two of the three seats, and even made threats to leave the partnership.
Adan Keynan, an Eldas MP, stated that Jubilee was entitled to at least one PSC seat because it was the second-largest party in Azimio.
Given that he served as the coalition party’s chair in the lead-up to the August elections, Uhuru’s silence over the recent disputes in Azimio aroused concerns about whether or not he was still a member of the party.
