The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has revealed the names of five police officers who arrested the late Albert Ojwang.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 11, before the Senate, IPOA Vice Chairperson Anne Wanjiku revealed that Ojwang was arrested by Sergeant Sigei, Sergeant Wesley Kipkorir Kirui, and PC Dennis Kinyoni on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
Other officers who arrested Ojwang include PC Milton Mwanze and PC Boniface Rapudo.
“On 7th of June at around 8 AM, a team comprising Sergeant Sigei, Sergeant Wesley Kipkorir Kirui, PC Dennis Kinyoni, PC Milton Mwanze, and PC Boniface Rapudo went to Lida center in Homa Bay County and arrested the deceased at around 2:30 PM and took him to Mawego police station,” Wanjiku revealed.
The IPOA Vice Chairperson also revealed that Ojwang was transferred to Central Police Station, where he was booked at 9:31 PM.
Wanjiku noted that IPOA learned of the death of Ojwang through the media and a police signal that the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, sent to the authority.

“The authority learned the death of Ojwang in police custody on June 8, 2025, from the media as well as a police signal sent to the authority by the IG and immediately commenced investigations,” said Wanjiku.
She disclosed that IPOA officials visited Central Police Station to establish the sequence of events leading to the death of Ojwang and identify any indicators of misconduct.
The IPOA Vice Chairperson said they collected blood samples from the scene; all police documents were collected from Central Police Station, and the CCTV DVR was seized for forensic analysis.
Further, Wanjiku said IPOA has collected statements from all five police officers who arrested Ojwang.
Further, she mentioned that preliminary findings indicate that the CCTV at Central Police Station’s OCS office had been interfered with.
“The CCTV systems located at the OCS office had been interfered with,” she stated.
