Herders kill six lions from Amboseli national park in Kajiando County after they attacked and killed their livestock.

Six lions from the Amboseli National Park have been killed by irate herders in Nashipai village, Imbirikani area Kajiado South sub-county after they attacked and killed their livestock.

According to a statement from the Kenya Wildlife Services on Saturday, the pride of 6 had killed 11 goats and a dog on Friday night sparking rage from the villagers.

“The lions killed eleven goats and one dog last night. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident as over the last week, four other lions have been killed resulting to a total of ten lions killed in the Amboseli ecosystem,” read part of a statement by KWS.

KWS added that the Human-wildlife conflict has also seen the death of more lions as others were killed in a similar fashion last week.

“Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident as last week, four other lions have been killed resulting in a total of ten lions killed in the Amboseli ecosystem,” read part of the statement.

KWS has now called on residents to explore ways to minimize the risk of human-wildlife conflict in the region, assuring them of protection from wild animals.

In a meeting held between KWS Board of Trustees Chair Lieutenant General (Rtd) Wolter Raria Koipaton and the local community, long-lasting solutions were met that will address the conflict while protecting both human lives and wildlife.

“The KWS officials engaged the community in an effort to find lasting solutions that will address the conflict while protecting both human lives and wildlife,” read part of KWS statement.

The incident comes just a few days after a lion believed to be the oldest lion in the Amboseli park, 19-year-old Loonkito, was speared to death by Maasai morans (warriors) after straying into a livestock pen.
