Isiolo County Governor Abdi Guyo has survived an impeachment attempt after the Senate ruled the process undertaken by the Isiolo County Assembly was invalid.

In a session on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, marked by sharp legal scrutiny, senators upheld preliminary objections raised by the governor’s legal team, who argued that the assembly failed to follow due process and disregarded a court order halting the proceedings.

The objections questioned the legality of the County Assembly’s sitting and whether the motion was properly debated and passed.

In the decisive vote, 31 senators sided with the objections, effectively terminating the impeachment motion, while 12 voted to proceed with the trial.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who moved the motion, said the Assembly’s process raised constitutional red flags.

“This House must insist on procedural compliance if the integrity of devolution and the rule of law are to be upheld,” he stated.

Other senators echoed the sentiment, warning that flouting legal requirements when removing a governor could set a dangerous precedent.

“Impeachment is a serious constitutional tool. It must be used responsibly and within the confines of the law,” said one senator during deliberations.

The ruling marks a major political win for Governor Guyo, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and accused the County Assembly of pursuing a politically motivated ouster.

The Senate’s decision sends the matter back to Isiolo, where political tensions remain high.
