Jorginho declines Chelsea contract offer
Chelsea makes Jorginho contract offer but the midfielder declines, seeking a pay rise as negotiations continue.
Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has been unable to find an agreement over a new contract in early negotiations with the club.
Initial terms on an extension of the contract, which would keep his pay at the same level as his current £120,000 per week, have been proposed to him by the club.
The Italian international has requested a pay increase that would bring his salary to a level with that of Cesar Azpilicueta, who recently signed a new contract at £150,000 per week,
Jorginho’s current deal will expire in June 2023, just as that of fellow midfielder N’Golo Kante.
Jorginho will be free to talk to foreign clubs from January over a potential free transfer next summer.
However, both Jorginho and Kante would prefer to stay at Stamford Bridge rather than look for new clubs but want to be seen as important senior players for the coming seasons.
Chelsea’s negotiations with Kante have also stalled after he wanted a longer-term agreement than the two-year deal offered that included a club option for an extra year.
The discussions come amid another injury setback for Kante, whose hamstring complaint will now keep him out until after the World Cup.
The new Boehly-Clearlake ownership regime at Chelsea are currently prioritizing the duo’s renewal talks with any failure to keep the senior midfielders set to influence transfer market activity.
