Karua clarifies motive behind 10M signatures "Not for Ruto impeachment"

Azimio co principal Martha Karua says the collection of 10M signatures is not meant for William Ruto impeachment

Azimio co principal Martha Karua says the collection of 10M signatures is not meant for William Ruto impeachment.

On Monday, July 10, Azimio Principal Martha Karua clarified the intent behind the opposition’s campaign to gather 10 million signatures.

Karua noted during an interview with Spice FM that the collection of signatures acted as a count of Kenyan citizens who backed Azimio’s anti-government protests.

The Narc Kenya party leader deviated from Eugene Wamalwa’s earlier assertion that signatures may be used to overthrow President William Ruto’s administration.

She noted that Kenyans could air their complaints and disappointments on a forum afforded by the signature collection.

“Since there is no place big enough to hold a general meeting of the Kenyan public, we will hold as many meetings as possible across the country.

“The people will hold their own referendum of signatures. By the time we hit the threshold of 10 million, we will know majority of Kenyans are speaking,” she stated noting that for a long time, Azimio was seen as not having the support of the people.

Karua noted that by appending their signatures, Kenyans could exercise their will and sovereignty directly.

The execution of the Finance Act 2023 and the pursuit of electoral justice were two of the four main concerns she listed that Azimio was addressing in its conflict with the government.

The coalition also fought for fair selection of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission selection panel and respect for multiparty democracy.

“It will be a body count of the people who are supporting the cause,” she explained while stressing the main goal of the signature drive.

Karua further reiterated the weekly protests would go on until further notice as Ruto’s government had shown contempt card to the issues affecting Kenyans.

When questioned about the use of cars by Azimio principals during protests, despite the coalition’s call for Kenyans to carpool and explore alternative means of transportation to undermine the revenue generated from fuel Value Added Tax (VAT) for Ruto’s government, the former Gichugu MP defended the coalition’s advisory position.

She emphasized that she, along with Eugene Wamalwa and other Azimio leaders, had often practised carpooling on numerous occasions.
