KCPE candidate burns during night party celebrations-known as academic fire after exams.
On December 1st, a fire at a Nyahururu Town Academy resulted in the serious injury of a KCPE (Kenya Certificate for Primary Education) candidate.
The student was burnt during a celebration known as academic fire, in which candidates torch books and other related school items after completing exams.
According to reports, the pupil’s hands and face were the parts that burned the worst.
She was promptly taken for emergency medical care to the Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital.
“School head teacher had asked all the candidates to gather outside the school compound and ordered us to light a bonfire after their evening meals as part of celebrations which went up to around 2:00 am,” the victim recounted.
At the hospital, the pupil noted that the celebrations were halted when she accidentally went too close to the fire and lost her balance.
On their part, her parents lamented that they were informed of the issue later, on Thursday, December 1, when they went to pick up their daughter as instructed by the school.
“I only learned of the incident from another pupil who directed me to where my daughter was lying while writhing in pain,” the girl’s mother complained.
The mother expressed her dissatisfaction with the school, saying that it ought to have taken adequate precautions to avoid such a tragedy.
She requested help from the appropriate authorities so that her daughter may receive justice and care.
The victim’s mother stated that the administration of the school appeared to have no remorse for the incident, which would probably have permanently scarred her daughter.
She complained to the Riverside Police Post, and the police started an inquiry.
