19-year-old KCSE candidate electrocuted to death in Mombasa just after finishing her exam paper.

A family in Bangladesh village of Mikindani ward, Mombasa County, is mourning after their daughter was electrocuted to death minutes after finishing a KCSE exam paper.

The Kajembe High School student was going back home after finishing the day’s paper when she met her unfortunate demise.

According to reports, Leonida Atieno lost her life after she stepped on a live electricity wire in the Bangladesh area near her home.

Due to heavy downpours in Mombasa, all narrow paths between the mud and iron sheet houses were filled with stormwater and she was forced to walk through it.

According to residents, the student stepped into one area with hanging electric wires submerged and she was electrocuted to death.

“The girl had not even changed the school uniform, it’s so unfortunate, we don’t even know who to blame but definitely Kenya Power should have taken action before the accident,” one of the residents said.

Mombasa Police Commander Stephen Matu confirmed the incident saying that it was caused by the heavy rains being experienced in Mombasa.

He said that the deceased was electrocuted while trying to support herself on a hanging electricity wire to get her shoes which were being swiped away by the floods.

“We received a report of a form four candidate at Kajembe secondary school who was electrocuted while entering her parent’s house,” he said.

“She had removed her shoes but they were swept away by water, in the process of going after them. She touched a live hanging electricity wire to support herself and by the time she was being rescued, she had lost her life.”

The body has since been taken to the Coast General Hospital morgue as investigations continue.
