KDF clashes with landlords over the influx of high-rise buildings near military barracks.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) expressed their displeasure at the high-rise structures that were encroaching on their base of operations.

Lieutenant Colonel Juvenalis Atanja argued that the cropping developments surrounding their Laikipia Airbase and the outskirts of Nanyuki town have heavily affected their operations.

On Friday, December 2, Atanja spoke during a consultative meeting between the military and several county stakeholders. He claimed that the structures were a flight safety concern that seriously hampered the air patrols.

“Most buildings being erected near the airbase are built along flight paths used by the military jets and planes, which contravenes the urban planning regulations,” Atanja stated.

KDF appealed to Laikipia governor, Joshua Irungu, to halt all ongoing developments near the airbase until elaborate measures are employed to construct such structures near the facility.

Buildings, he reiterated, were barred from exceeding three floors.

“These buildings are a threat to the military and also those living around in case of a mishap,” the colonel warned.

The consultative gathering also covered topics related to land, infrastructure, the environment, and natural resources.

Major Ishmael Olwal, the flight safety officer for the Kenya Air Force, also spoke at the conference and said that the tower blocks close to the military base had an impact on the approach and takeoff of planes during training exercises.

The major stated, “We have seen instances of private landowners expanding their boundaries to encroach on military land, posing a security danger.

Joshua Irungu, the governor, promised to destroy any buildings discovered to have violated the rules.

Irungu promised the expedition that the county’s urban planning department would check the disputed land area close to the barracks.

The governor vowed, “We will see to it that buildings that have broken the law are pulled down. We will not accept shady landlords endangering the lives of renters and the soldiers.”

According to aviation laws, no person is allowed to construct a building or a structure within the vicinity of an aerodrome unless authorized by the National Aviation Authority.
