A Kenya Airways (KQ) plane flight number KQ613 bound for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was on Saturday, April 27 night forced to return back to Mombasa.

The plane, which was carrying East African Community (EAC) Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza among other passengers, failed to land at JKIA due to poor visibility caused by bad weather.

In a statement on Sunday, April 28, KQ said it had diverted a number of its flights due to the ongoing heavy rains in Nairobi.

“Due to the heavy rains and poor visibility in Nairobi we have diverted a number of our flights and as a result may have extended delays for some of our departures out of Nairobi. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to our customers,” KQ stated.

The national carrier noted that it prioritises the safety and well-being of its crew and customers.

On December 17, 2023, a KQ flight headed to Kigali Airport in Rwanda was forced to turn back to JKIA.

In a statement, KQ explained that the plane encountered low visibility and deteriorating weather as it was approaching the Kigali International Airport.

The flight made two attempts to land but they were unsuccessful forcing it to return to Nairobi.
