The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory to Kenyans urging them to take precautions over the heavy rainfall expected in different parts of the country.
In a notice, the Meteorological agency warned that the ongoing heavy rains across various parts of the country are expected to intensify from April 15 to April 18.
The met department stressed that residents in select areas such as Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga Kakamega, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Nairobi, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Murang’a and Kirinyaga should take extra precautions as they are likely to be the most affected by the rains.
According to the agency, the heavy rains are likely to be accompanied by gusty winds, large ocean waves and strong southerly winds in the southeastern region.
“Heavy rainfall being experienced over several parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands, coast and the northern sector is expected to continue from 13th April 2024. Heavy rainfall (of more than 40mm in 24 hrs) is predicted over Lake Victoria Vasin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands and South Coast on 14th April 2024,” the notice reads in parts.

The weatherman further advised residents in the mentioned areas to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods and reduced visibility.
The met department also advised residents to avoid sheltering under trees and take precautions when navigating through the rains to avoid being struck by lightning.
“Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream. Residents are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
Strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damage. Large waves may affect marine activities. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” the department added.
